The Falcon Throne in paperback … Book 1 of The Tarnished Crown

To celebrate the paperback release of my latest book, The Falcon Throne, book 1 of The Tarnished Crown, I’m teaming up with my wonderful publisher Orbit for an online writing workshop. This will include an Ask Me Anything session on Reddit, and the chance to have a sample of your work read and assessed by myself and my wonderful editor. Here’s a link to the full press release, with more information. Also, you can email the organisers at Orbit: gemma.conley-smith@littlebrown.co.uk or anna.jackson@littlebrown.co.uk

And in the meantime, here’s what some of the critics are saying about The Falcon Throne:

‘Blood, dirt and backstabbing . . . impressively elaborate and detailed . . . this dark world will draw you in’ (SCIFINOW)

‘A truly epic read full of intrigue and betrayal anchored in wonderful characters’ (John Gwynne, author of MALICE)

‘Complex and engrossing; fans of George R.R. Martin and Joe Abercrombie should particularly take note’ (PUBLISHERS WEEKLY)

‘It will entrap you and hold you captive, you will look up from its pages to discover you have lost hours’ (APN NETWORK)

‘The sheer scope and genius of this series dazzles… stylistically brilliant’ (SPECULATING ON SPECFIC)

‘Excellent writing, amazing characters, intricate woven plotlines, and lots and lots of blood, most of that unfortunately spurting from the wrong people. No elves or dragons, but some of the most in-depth world-building I’ve ever read, and the heroes (and anti-heroes) could shake themselves off the page. This book drew me in with the opening sentence and held me until the end . . . I remain breathless from the read’ (LIBRARY THING)

‘Fans of George R.R. Martin, Robert Jordan and other such writers of epic fantasy will find much to like here . . . a compelling read’ (READING LARK)

‘Miller’s numerous fans will definitely stay for the long haul’ (Sunday Canberra Times)

‘A major new epic fantasy begins’ (Queensland Times)

  1. Hi Karen, I love your books and I am at present reading The Falcon Throne. ( The Tarnished Crown ) Have you published book 2 in this series yet as I will be devastated to have to wait too long to read it 😦

    • Thank you! I’m so happy you’re enjoying Falcon Throne. I’m working on the next one now, but paused for the moment due to herniated discs in my neck. But the story is always burbling along in my mind and I hope to be back to it full speed ahead very soon. No firm publication date yet, but most likely next year. Sorry to make you wait! But these are big and complicated books. Once my stupid health is sorted I will be much faster.

      • I also very much enjoyed The Falcon Throne. I couldn’t put it down. I hope your health is well and the creation of book 2 is coming along nicely.

      • I also very much enjoyed The Falcon Throne. Such a gloriously heart-wrenching tragedy. I hope your health is well and the creation of book two is well underway.

      • Chad, thank you so much! I’m tickled pink you enjoyed it and yes, writing is back underway on bk 2. I’m going to be writing on an insane schedule to get it finished by the end of the year, but I think I can do it.

  2. How goes the writing on book two of The Tarnished Crown?

Eager Fan here. I rarely pre-order hardcovers, but this one will be ordered from my local, independent bookstore as soon as it’s available for pre-order. I may take that day off work, too, if it isn’t published on a weekend.

    • Chad, I am closing in on the home stretch of the first major draft. It’s been a real ride, getting back up to speed again. Kind of like having to relearn who I am, after the horrors of last year. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate your patience and enthusiasm! If it helps at all, I’m super happy with how the story is unfolding and I am madly in love with a bunch of new characters! Thanks for being such a great reader. I’ll be announcing the draft’s completion with bells and whistles soon — so stay tuned!

    • Well, as you can see by my horribly slow reply, life is still playing silly buggers with me. Bk 2 will be finished soon, though, and then it will face the arduous professional editing phase of the game. Stay tuned for long long long delayed blog updates! And thank you, again, for your stunningly kind comments. They’ve been a bright light on some dark days, let me tell you.
